Dazy

A minimalistic mockup showing a game being played on a white retro handheld gaming console.

Dazy is a retro-inspired 2D platformer and my first fully self-developed game project. I created every aspect from scratch including gameplay, pixel art, sound design, music, typography, and programming; making it a full exploration of game development from start to finish.

The character and core theme draw inspiration from classic fairytale imagery, particularly the poisoned apple motif popularized by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Rather than retelling the story, I reinterpreted the symbolism:
Dazy is a young witch collecting poisoned apples, which function as both a progression and reward system.

Players navigate levels using a key mechanic: gliding on a broom after a double jump, giving Dazy extended airtime and enabling horizontal movement across wider gaps. The game features a star-based system to encourage exploration and mastery:

  • Collect at least 25% of apples = 1 star (level not unlocked)

  • Collect at least 50% of apples = 2 stars (door to next level unlocks)

  • Collect 100% of apples = 3 stars (full completion reward)

The game runs at a nostalgic 240×160 resolution with a limited five-color, 8-bit–inspired palette, giving it a soft, playful retro aesthetic. All sprites, tilesets, backgrounds, and UI elements were hand-crafted in pixel art using LibreSprite. I also designed a custom 68-character Latin display font to reinforce the visual identity, my first exploration into type design.

Developed in GameMaker, all mechanics, systems, and assets were implemented independently.
No AI tools were used. Everything, from code to art to audio, was created manually.

Dazy is published on itch.io and GX Games under the name waspiewoice.
